The Class 5 medical self-declaration allows recreational and private pilots to self-assess and self-declare without requiring a designated aviation medical examiner (DAME) to conduct a formal medical assessment.
Since February 2024, 594 pilots have been issued with a Class 5 medical self-declaration record.
We sought feedback from pilots about their experience in obtaining their Class 5 medical self-declaration record, and here’s what they had to say…
Most said it was a positive step forward for people interested in flying but who don’t necessarily intend to pursue it as their full-time job. They noted that the Class 5 medical and application process minimises the rigmarole that a career pilot would normally go through to obtain clearance to fly.
They also highlighted the ease of the application process, the cost, and the speed at which they were approved and received their record as the main factors that make the Class 5 a viable option for aviation hobbyists.
'If you need a medical for recreational flying VFR, do a Class 5,' one respondent says.
'CASA has made an effort to address some issues surrounding medicals and considered the group to which the Class 5 can apply,' said another.
'This is a privilege based on honesty and trust. It may also transfer to an individual the responsibility to become more acquainted with, and take enhanced informed interest, in their own health,' another says.
Dr Kate Manderson, CASA’s Principal Medical Officer describes the Class 5 medical self-declaration as a first of its kind in the world.
'Class 5 medical self-declaration aims to improve accessibility to a streamlined medical certification pathway for the general aviation and recreational aviation community.'
'Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, satisfactorily meet the Class 5 medical requirements, and make a self-declaration, will be automatically issued with a Class 5 medical.'
'Go for it. It’s a great step towards reducing the costs for recreational aviation,' says another respondent.
'If it suits your needs, then it’s the best way to keep cost and complexity down whilst flying a VH registered aircraft,' says another.
'Just do it!'
