Get your operator accreditation

You must get a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) operator accreditation to fly for business or as part of your job, if your drone weighs:

  • 250 g or less (a micro RPA)
  • more than 250 g but no more than 2 kg (a very small RPA)
  • more than 2 kg but no more than 25 kg and you only fly it over your own land (a small RPA).

You do not need an operator accreditation if:

You must also register your drone before you can fly.

Operator accreditation requirements

You must get an operator accreditation if you fly for business or as part of your job, including, but not limited to:

  • selling photos or videos taken from a drone
  • inspecting industrial equipment, construction sites or infrastructure
  • monitoring, surveillance or security services
  • research and development
  • any drone activities for your employer.

Obtaining your accreditation is:

  • free
  • online
  • valid for 3 years. 

Note that you must obtain accreditation to fly and supervise others.

You must be 16 or older to become an accredited operator. An accredited adult (over 18) must supervise you if you’re under 16.

  1. Create or use your Digital Identity to log into myCASA

    You can use Digital Identity to login to the myCASA portal.

  2. Select 'Apply for an individual ARN'

    After you have logged in, navigate to 'Need an ARN?' and select 'Apply for aviation reference number (ARN)'.

    You can link your existing ARN or apply for a new one. If you’re operating on behalf of a business, you’ll also need an organisation ARN.

  3. Enter your personal details

    You will then enter your personal details. These include:

    • name
    • address
    • date of birth
    • sex
    • phone numbers
    • nationality.
  4. Complete the quiz

    Select 'Individual account' then select 'Drone accreditation'. Read the declaration carefully.

    Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the accreditation quiz.

    You will need to score 85% or higher to pass the quiz.

Renew your accreditation

Operator accreditation is valid for 3 years. 

You'll receive an email notification when your accreditation is up for renewal.

You can renew your operator accreditation under the 'Drone accreditation' section of your myCASA account.

You can renew your accreditations up to 30 days before.

Accreditations expire automatically. To keep flying, make sure you have renewed your operator accreditation by the due date.
