Earlier this year we sought feedback from the aviation industry on the preliminary design while Airservices Australia consulted the local community. Through our consultation we received suggestions to change parts of the design to enhance safety, operational efficiency and equitable access in the area.

Based on the feedback received, we have adjusted parts of the design to include:

  • modifications to portions of the lower limit of the controlled airspace
  • introduction of a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) from Lismore
  • adjustments to some of the arrival and departure procedures at Ballina.

If you have feedback on the preferred airspace design, you can comment via the CASA Consultation hub until 10 December 2024.

Feedback received on the preferred design will help CASA finalise the Airspace Change Proposal (ACP) in collaboration with Airservices Australia.

Background on Ballina airspace changes

Airspace around Ballina Airport will be controlled by air traffic controllers from late 2025 as CASA and Airservices move to develop services to accommodate the airport’s growth.

This follows an airspace review of the Ballina region in 2022.

We have been engaging with industry about the introduction of controlled airspace around Ballina.

Airservices is leading consultation with the community via their Engage Airservices website.
