TAWS for Part 135, Subpart 121.Z and EX74/24 operators

Many operators need to fit a Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) to their aircraft. We put these requirements in place under the transition to the flight operations regulations that started in 2021.

We responded to operator feedback and made further changes to the TAWS requirements in 2024.

We permit some aircraft that do not strictly fit within Part 135 to operate in combination of other rules and Part 135. The 2 examples of this are operating under a combination of Subpart 121.Z and Part 135, or a combination of EX74/24 and Part 135.

The following TAWS requirements apply to each of these 3 circumstances:

  • if your operation is not using the provisions of Subpart 121.Z and not taking advantage of EX74/24 (formerly EX97/22) then Section 11.25 of the Part 135 MOS may apply to you
  • if your operation is using the provisions of Subpart 121.Z and not taking advantage of EX74/24 (formerly EX97/22) – regulation 121.775 as amended by section 24 of applies to you
  • for an operator using EX74/24 (formerly EX97/22) – the requirements in this exemption apply to you.

Turbine engine aeroplane

In most cases, if a turbine-engine aeroplane requires TAWS for a flight you must use TAWS-Class A. However, we permit some turbine engine aeroplanes to use a TAWS-Class B+.

Piston engine aeroplane

If your piston engine aeroplane needs TAWS for a flight, it can be either a:

  • TAWS-Class A
  • TAWS-Class B+
  • TAWS-Class B.
