CASA is committed to using artificial intelligence (AI):
- in a safe, ethical, secure, transparent, and responsible manner that is aligned to Government policy
- to enhance aviation safety and support our responsibilities under the Civil Aviation Act 1988 and other Commonwealth legislation
- to increase the effectiveness of our enabling services and to support our staff in their roles.
AI innovation opportunities
The rapid advancement of AI presents opportunities to innovate across the Australian Government, including at CASA. We recognise the potential for AI to support and empower our people to improve safety and regulatory compliance outcomes across the aviation industry.
How we use AI
We currently use AI to analyse data to provide insights and to improve workplace productivity in our service delivery, policy and legal, and enabling activities. We are also undertaking controlled trials of AI to improve operational efficiency in a limited and safe way. We will update this page as our use of AI evolves.
Our staff are the final decision makers on all CASA advice or services.
Keeping us accountable
CASA’s default position is to comply with the Australian Government’s mandatory AI expectations for government entities, as set out in the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government and the AI Plan for the Australian Public Service 2025.
In accordance with Australia’s AI Ethics Principles, we will use AI safely, responsibly and transparently. We will say publicly where we use AI.
CASA has established governance on the deployment of AI to ensure it aligns with our ethical standards.
CASA has appointed our Chief Information Officer as our AI Accountable Officer. The AI Accountable Officer is responsible for implementing our AI policy and is accountable to our Executive Committee. We’ve also appointed our National Manager of Surveillance as our Chief AI Officer to drive adoption in a responsible and ethical way across CASA.
Additionally, we have established a cross-functional AI Working Group, made up of senior managers from across the organisation, that is accountable to our Executive Committee. This working group guides the safe, responsible and coordinated adoption of AI to realise its benefits while supporting the effective management of any risks.
