Removing a licence exclusion

If your Part 66 licence includes exclusions, you can remove them by completing additional knowledge, experience and assessment requirements. This allows you to expand the certification privileges of your licence.

To remove an exclusion, apply to CASA. Follow these steps:

  1. Identify the exclusion

You need to identify the exclusion from your licence.

  2. Choose your pathway

    • Part 147 Maintenance Training Organisation (MTO)
    • CASA self-study.
  3. Complete exams and experience

You need to complete required exams and experience.

  4. Submit your application

Understanding exclusions

An exclusion is a limitation on your licence. It excludes you from certifying maintenance on an aircraft system where you have not demonstrated the required knowledge and experience, such as training and practical experience.

Choose your pathway

There are 2 pathways to remove an exclusion from a licence category:

  • Part 147 MTO
  • self-study training and examination pathway.

Pathway 1: Part 147 Maintenance Training Organisation

A Part 147 MTO (approved by us to conduct licence category training) can provide exclusion removal:

  • training
  • examination
  • assessment.
  1. Contact an MTO

Contact an MTO to discuss the exclusion you want to remove and required training.

  2. Complete required training

Complete the relevant units of competency (see Appendix VIII of the Part 66 MOS).

  3. Complete required examinations

Sit module exams specified by the MTO.

  4. Submit your application

Once your training and assessment has been reported to CASA by the MTO, submit your application to us.

Pathway 2: Self-study training and examination

If you choose to use this pathway, you will need to demonstrate both knowledge and practical experience.

  1. Complete required module exams

Pass the relevant basic knowledge module exam(s) (see tables below).

  2. Record your practical experience

Record relevant maintenance experience in your:

You must include evidence of work performed on the excluded system.

Note: Part 66 modular licence holders must still meet the required practical experience duration – see Table 3A and clause 66.A.30(ba) of the Part 66 Manual of Standards - when seeking to remove at least one aircraft system or subsystem exclusion from their licence to gain an extension of licence privileges.

  3. Submit your application

When you submit your application to us, make sure you include your:

How to remove an exclusion from a type rating

To remove an exclusion from a type rating endorsement (only available via the Part 147 MTO pathway), you must:

  • remove the exclusion from your licence category
  • complete:
    • theoretical training and exams (66.A.45 (d) of the Part 66 MOS)
    • practical training and assessment (66.A.50 and 66.A.55 of the Part 66 MOS).

These must be relevant to the excluded aircraft system you want to remove.

Training may be provided by either a:

The MTO or AMO will let us know when you’ve successfully completed the requirements.
