The Air transport operation – larger aeroplane (ATO-LA) Sector is broadly defined as air transport operations using larger aeroplanes. There are two parts to the definition.

  1. 'Air Transport Operations' refers to operations that are conducted for hire or reward for the purposes of any of:
    • passenger transport
    • cargo transport
    • medical transport.
  2. 'Larger Aeroplane' is defined those aeroplanes that have either:
    • a seating capacity of more than 9 seats*
    • a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of more than 8,618 kg.

*Note: there is an exemption in place until 2027 that affects certain aeroplanes with 10 to 13 passenger seats. Although defined as larger aeroplanes in Part 121 of CASR, it allows them to operate under Part 135 of CASR with additional requirements. Read CASA EX74/24 for more information
