Gliding activities sector safety risk profile

Published date:

The gliding activities sector safety risk profile (SSRP) focuses on:

  • Part 91 of CASR General operating and Flight Rules
  • Part 149 of CASR Approved self-administering aviation organisations (ASAO).

The SSRP took place on 18 to 19 April 2026.

Participants reviewed safety occurrence trends in the gliding sector between 2015 and 2025 to identify key safety issues and emerging risks. The analysis used data from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), Gliding Australia records (SOAR), and the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE).

The data shows that, although gliding activity has changed over time, accidents and serious incidents remain ongoing safety challenges. The most common risks involve launch and landing, loss of control, collisions, and weather-related decision-making. The analysis also identified links between pilot experience, operational exposure, and safety outcomes, helping inform future safety initiatives and risk reduction across the gliding sector.
