Part 42 of CASR Continuing airworthiness requirements for aircraft and aeronautical products

Current

Part 42 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) sets out the overarching requirements for continuing airworthiness management and maintenance of aircraft. 

The rule: 

  • establishes that the registered operator is responsible for continuing airworthiness of an aircraft
  • sets out the continuing airworthiness management requirements for aircraft 
  • sets out the requirements for a continuing airworthiness management organisation (CAMO)
  • provides permissions for carrying out maintenance on aircraft and aeronautical products 
  • establishes the requirements for issuing a certificate of release to service (CRS) after maintenance for aircraft and aeronautical products 
  • sets out the requirements for the use of aeronautical products 
  • sets out the requirements for reporting major defects on aircraft and aeronautical products 
  • sets out the requirements for aircraft maintenance programs and reliability programs 
  • establishes the airworthiness review process and the requirements for the review. 

Who it affects

Part 42 affects: 

  • aircraft owners and registered operators 
  • air operators certificate holders
  • continuing airworthiness management organisations
  • part 145 approved maintenance organisations 
  • licensed aircraft maintenance engineers (LAME) 
  • persons authorised to approve aircraft maintenance programs 
  • persons authorised to carry out airworthiness reviews.
