Part 105 of CASR Parachuting from aircraft

Rule status

Current

Part 105 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) sets out the operational requirements for aircraft used to facilitate parachute descents. These are in addition to Part 91 which also applies to parachuting operations.

Part 105 also includes the requirements for parachute airworthiness and the operational rules for the safe conduct of parachute activities.

Part 105 Manual of Standards

A Manual of Standards (MOS) supports Part 105 and contains requirements of greater technical detail. We made the Part 105 MOS in August 2023. It commenced on 2 December 2023.

The Part 149 rules complement the Part 105 rules for certification and conduct of parachuting operations. These are for organisations that administer sport aviation activities including sport parachuting from aircraft. We made consequential amendments to the Part 149 MOS in August 2023 to ensure consistency with the Part 105 MOS. Those changes commenced on 2 December 2023.

Who it affects

Part 105 of CASR affects:

  • individuals and organisations involved in sport parachuting operations from aircraft
  • operators of aircraft used in sport parachuting operations
  • users of common airspace.

Updated:

Specifications issued under Part 105 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 (CASR) permit parachutists to enter cloud in the course of a descent in locations (drop zones (DZ)) where this has been approved by a Part 105 ASAO. This AC provides guidance to parachute operators seeking such approvals and outlines the criteria a Part 105 ASAO will use in assessing such applications and the kinds of operational conditions that may be specified in granting approvals.
