Part 173 of CASR Instrument flight procedure design

Rule status

Part 173 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) sets out the standards for the design of instrument flight procedures

The Part also sets out the requirements for the certification of designers of instrument approach and departure procedures. This includes:

  • the qualifications and training required for persons engaged in instrument flight procedure design
  • the procedures used by organisations conducting design work
  • provisions for on-going maintenance of procedures.

Who it affects

Part 173 affects:

  • organisations intending to provide an instrument flight procedure design service. This includes people employed by certified designers who must meet minimum qualification and experience standards
  • aerodrome operators
  • pilots
  • the aviation community.

Legislative instruments include exemptions to regulatory requirements in aviation regulations or a Manual of Standards.
