New technology has improved navigation, traffic awareness and flight planning for recreational pilots. However, participants identified several risks associated with increased reliance on technology.
Key concerns included distraction from electronic flight bags (EFBs), differences between electronic traffic awareness systems and limited understanding of automated avionics systems.
Participants also discussed reports of some pilots disabling ADS-B equipment to avoid fees or charges. They found the increasing cost of EFB subscriptions as another challenge.
What you can do
You can reduce technology risks by maintaining both traditional flying skills and technology skills.
Key actions include:
- remembering that technology supports, but does not replace, lookout and good flying practices
- understanding the limitations of automated systems
- maintaining manual flying and navigation skills
- using EFBs in a way that reduces distraction during flight
- understanding the limitations of ADS-B and traffic awareness systems
- understanding that not all electronic traffic awareness systems work together
- helping visiting pilots learn local aerodrome procedures.
What we have done
We support the safe use of technology through education, guidance and safety promotion.
We work with other government agencies to support the ADS-B rebate program. The program encourages the voluntary installation of ADS-B equipment in Australian-registered aircraft operating under visual flight rules (VFR).
The program runs through until mid-2027. You can submit an applications through Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) Rebate Program – Round 2.
Current activities include:
- promoting awareness of ADS-B and electronic traffic awareness technologies
- supporting industry understanding of automation and cockpit workload
- monitoring safety trends related to technology use and distraction
- providing guidance on situational awareness and maintaining an effective lookout
- supporting guidance on radio procedures, surveillance technologies and traffic awareness.
