Sector threats, issues and hazards

The SSRP workshop found a range of hazards affecting recreational pilots. These include:

  • operational
  • environmental
  • technical
  • human performance.

Many of these risks are already well known. However, participants said that changing operating environments and new technologies continue to create new safety challenges.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of effective Safety Management System (SMS) processes. This includes:

  • identifying hazards early
  • reporting occurrences
  • monitoring safety performance
  • learning from incidents.

In the following sections:

  • 'What you can do' refers to actions that may be taken by the broader recreational aviation community, including Recreational Aviation Australia (as the Approved Self-administering Aviation Organisation [ASAO]), affiliated clubs, and individual pilots
  • 'What we have done' refers to actions undertaken by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in support of aviation safety and the management of identified sector risks.
