The recreational flying (RAAus) sector safety risk profile (SSRP) focuses on:
- Part 91 of CASR General operating and Flight Rules
- Part 149 of CASR Approved self-administering aviation organisations (ASAO).
The SSRP workshop took place on 9 May 2026 at the Southport Flying Club in Queensland. Representatives from CASA, Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) and the recreational aviation sector discussed the safety risks affecting recreational flying.
Participants shared their operational experience and reviewed safety data from 2015 to 2025. The analysis used Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) data, RAAus records and Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) activity statistics.
The data identified the sector's main safety risks and trends. While flying activity changed over the period, accidents and serious incidents remained an ongoing safety challenge.
The most common occurrences were engine failures, loss of control, hard landings, runway events and collision-related occurrences. The landing phase of flight had the highest number of occurrences.
The analysis also found differences in occurrence rates across regions. It highlighted an ageing pilot population and higher occurrence rates in aircraft with lower airframe hours.
