Getting a type rating overseas

We recognise overseas aircraft type rating training and flight tests if:

  • you completed them in a recognised foreign state
  • the training meets that state's requirements for the rating
  • the rating matches the Australian type rating.

Recognised foreign states

You must have completed the training and flight test in a recognised foreign state, which includes:

Complete your type rating training overseas

You can complete type rating training overseas with a provider authorised by the national aviation authority (NAA) of the recognised foreign state.

You can also complete the required flight test or assessment overseas, with an examiner authorised by that same NAA.

Before start your training

Check the following before you start:

  • Your training provider is authorised by the NAA of a foreign recognised state.
  • That same NAA authorises your examiner to conduct the flight test.
  • Ensure your overseas training provider will provide you evidence suitable for an Australian type rating application.
  • You hold a CASA aviation reference number (ARN).

Keep your training records, certificate of completion and assessment results. You will need to attach certified true copies to your application.

  3. Complete the form

    Complete the form in myCASA.

    Attach any relevant information.

  4. Submit your application

We will email you to confirm receipt.

We'll assess your application and grant the type rating if we determine that your overseas training and assessment meet Australian requirements.

To obtain an Australian pilot type rating, your overseas training must demonstrate competency as a pilot-in-command. We do not recognise training that only demonstrates your competency as a co-pilot.
