This issue involves organisations operating in and around controlled airspace.
What can CASR Part 133 operators do?
To mitigate operation risks when operating in and around controlled airspace, an operator can:
- ensure flight crew are aware of issues and potential risks associated with any aspect of their planned flight including:
- ATC / tower closure times
- operational restrictions
- adjacent airspace concerns.
- where longer term known issues exist organisations should mitigate the risk as far as practicable through SOPs
- access or reference relevant CASA documents that detail correct procedures and airspace structure
- engage with Airservices around any airspace or air traffic control service issues presenting potential safety risk to operations
- use the Aviation State Engagement Forum (AvSEF) to submit an advisor notice or consultation proposals for airspace changes.
If you find occurrences meeting the reporting requirements of the Transport Safety Investigation Regulations, report them to the Air Traffic Safety Bureau (ATSB).
What is CASA doing or has already delivered?
The 'Your safety is in your hands' pilot safety campaign, supported by our Pilot safety hub, has a focus on operations at controlled aerodromes.
There are a variety of resources to support safe operations within controlled airspace on this site. This includes:
- videos on threat and error management considerations for pilots regarding communication in and around aerodromes
- webinar with an Air Traffic Controller on controlled aerodromes.
We have developed a series of 'Stay on Track' guides for VFR pilots. These guides provide guidance on flying into, out of and around a specific region. They can also help individuals in planning and conducting a flight.
View our current series on the Stay OnTrack booklets page.
We also play an active role in supporting the Aviation State Engagement Forum. This forum enables the Australian aviation industry to consult on aviation matters relating to airspace and procedures of a regional or national importance.
