Smaller non-controlled aerodromes are less likely to have weather information available.
What can CASR Part 121 operators do?
Make sure your crew understand procedures on what type of weather information is available for each aerodrome. This includes approved sources and other sources used for situational awareness only.
You can work with the Bureau of Meteorology and, or the aerodrome operator to advocate for the installation of an Automated Weather Information Service or other approved weather device. Organisations will deem necessary based on risk.
What is CASA doing or has already delivered?
We have released CASR Part 121. Part 121 outlines requirements for operators to make sure flight crew have appropriate information available to permit for effective flight planning and a safe flight.
This includes the types of information made available at aerodromes and safety requirements where types of information are not available.
Specifically, an operator must have procedures that will ensure:
- availability of flight planning information (CASR Part 121.180)
- requirements for Alternate Aerodromes (CASR Part 121.170)
- availability of appropriate Aerodrome Information (CASR Part 121.210).
