Air operator aircraft descriptions

This information explains how an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) lists aircraft and what the authorisations on it mean.

To understand this, you’ll need to refer to the Prescription of Aircraft and Ratings – CASR Part 61 Instrument and the Part 119 significant change rules, as amended by section 7 of CASA EX68/24.

Your AOC aircraft authorisations will be based on whether the aircraft requires the pilot to hold a Part 61 type rating or a Part 61 class rating.

Single-engine class and multi-engine class aircraft

This authorisation minimises the occasions when you need CASA’s approval to operate a new aircraft.

However, your first use of some aircraft within a class rating will still be a significant change that requires CASA’s approval. Refer to the exemption in section 7 of CASA EX68/24.

The main reasons you might need approval are:

  • The aircraft requires specific training and a flight review (as per Part 61).
  • It’s your first time operating a pressurised aircraft.
  • It’s your first time operating a turbine-powered aircraft.
  • The aircraft is covered by a class rating and;
    • The aeroplane has a maximum operational seating capacity of more than 9 seats, or a maximum take-off weight greater than 8,618 kg, or
    • For rotorcraft, the maximum take-off weight is greater than 3,175 kg.

Type-rated aircraft

This refers to aircraft listed as 'type-rated' under CASR Part 61. The AOC Operations Specification (OPSPEC) lists type-rated aircraft, which describes the aircraft by make, model, and series. CASA's AOCs and OPSPECs follow the format set by ICAO Annex 6.

Exposition content

Your exposition (a detailed document explaining your operations) must list the type, model, and registration of each aircraft you use.

If you're only using a certain aircraft for a short time, you can satisfy this exposition requirement by following the AMC 3 content in the AMC 119.205 entry in the Part 119 AMC/GM document.
