The Class 5 medical self‑declaration scheme will continue in its current form following a post‑implementation review.
Date
The review found that Class 5 is working as intended. It is supporting a large part of the recreational and private flying community while maintaining an appropriate level of safety.
The review also showed that many suggested changes would be better addressed through a different medical framework.
As a result of the review, we will consider this broader feedback as we work through how best to improve the aviation medical system. Any future policy proposal would be consulted as we work through this.
Why Class 5 is staying the same
The decision is based on 3 key considerations:
- Safety – The current limits appropriately manage risk for the activities Class 5 is designed for.
- Simplicity – Class 5 is deliberately straightforward. Expanding it would add complexity and blur the distinction between medical classes.
- Clarity – Keeping Class 5 stable gives pilots confidence in how the rules apply.
It follows consultation in 2025 and review by the Aviation Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP) and its Technical Working Group (TWG).
What this means for pilots
If you currently use, or plan to use, a Class 5 medical, nothing is changing.
