The preferred airspace design for a proposed VFR corridor to the southeast of Bankstown Airport is now available to review.

The proposed change will help to ensure continued safety by reducing aviation congestion and providing more equitable access to airspace as Sydney air traffic continues to grow. It will also support the safety of operations to and from Bankstown Airport when Western Sydney International Airport begins operating later this year.
The design addresses feedback received from a proposal in 2024 which raised safety concerns about the low-level nature of the corridor, the risk of mid-air collisions and the likelihood of airspace incursions.
The preferred design proposes:
- reclassifying a small portion of Sydney Airport's controlled airspace to Class D and Class G airspace
- the introduction of a one-way VFR corridor open in daylight hours and managed by air traffic controllers.
These changes are designed to enhance communication between aircraft and air traffic control, helping to maintain safety and efficiency within the reclassified airspace.
We’re seeking feedback to better understand if there are any additional operational or safety concerns that we should consider. The proposal and feedback received will then be formally considered under airspace regulations and a decision made.
