Our Board meeting 9 October 2025

The Board of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) meets six times per calendar year to fulfil its obligations under Section 53 of the Civil Aviation Act 1988 to decide the objectives, strategies and policies to be followed by CASA; to ensure that CASA performs its functions in a proper, efficient and effective manner.

The CASA Board met in Darwin on 9 October 2025. Prior to the meeting, the Board held a strategy session where they discussed Software Assurance in the context of certification of advanced air mobility aircraft; were provided an update on the implementation in Australia of the United States new sport pilot and light sport aircraft regulations - Modernisation of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC); and an update of work underway exploring options for leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) within CASA. Finally, the Board met with the Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Angus Mitchell, to discuss matters of interest to both organisations.

CASA Board meetings follow a theme-based agenda focusing on organisational and operational matters that affect the aviation industry. This included updates on CASA's corporate governance, financial position, enterprise risk, cyber security issues, organisational culture, and workforce planning. The Board also received its regular report from the Industry Complaints Commissioner.

CASA's Executive Management Team also provided updates on the General Aviation Workplan, emerging technology, CASA's performance against planned surveillance events and campaign surveillance activities.

Consistent with its commitment to hear directly from industry, the Board attended the Flying in the Wet Season seminar, which is hosted by CASA, ATSB and BOM. The seminar provides practical advice and information on the various hazards for pilots flying under visual flight rules during the wet season in Australia. This is regularly the largest aviation safety event that CASA supports and this year there were over 120 participants. The Board were encouraged by the number of attendees and the breadth of safety issues discussed by the three agencies.

The next Board meeting will be held in Melbourne on 11 December 2025.

Air Chief Marshal (Ret'd) Mark Binskin AC
