Since February 2024, the scheme has allowed recreational and private pilots to self-assess and self-declare, without requiring a medical assessment if they meet fitness and eligibility requirements and fly within specified operational limitations.

Dr Kate Manderson, Principal Medical Officer, says that the Class 5 is the first of its kind, with limited data either domestically or overseas. So, we want to ensure that the current operational and medical limitations are fit for purpose. It also forms part of our continuous improvement process.

Since the introduction of the scheme, we have also been collecting and analysing additional data through desktop reviews.

We aim to gather this information and provide a report to the aviation community by the end of this year.

The consultation can be accessed through our Consultation Hub.

Consultation closes 14 July 2025.
