We are consulting on a draft advisory circular (AC) that provides guidance for instrument flight procedures.

Aeroplane flying through the sky

Instrument flight procedures have been around for many years. As they’ve become more complex, there’s now a need for one clear document that explains and provides guidance on accepted industry procedures.

The purpose of this AC is to:

  • provide information on the use of instrument flight procedures in Australia
  • explain the reasons for and background to industry practices for instrument flight
  • clarify safety precautions to be used with instrument flight procedures.

The draft AC seeks to provide guidance and clarity on operational information for instrument flight procedures including:

  • background to IFR flight
  • airspace and ground infrastructure requirements
  • instrument approach procedures
  • non-precision approaches (NPAs)
  • approach procedures with vertical guidance (APVs)
  • precision approach procedures (PAs)
  • procedure entry, holding and noise abatement procedures
  • precision runway monitor (PRM) instrument approach procedures
  • helicopter procedures.
