We have published a summary of consultation on how regulation can better support uncrewed aircraft research and development (R&D). The discussion looked at how people test and develop new drone technology.

It considered ways to:

  • make approvals faster and easier
  • reduce delays and paperwork
  • allow more flexible licensing and registration during testing
  • use tools like trial environments and approved test sites.

Respondents supported a more proportionate, risk-based approach for R&D. They also called for clearer and more predictable processes.

We will continue to review the feedback and work with industry on next steps.
