CASA will continue the broad area beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) trial while we continue to develop a long-term approach to these operations.

Following an internal review of the trial, we are progressing work to establish an enduring approach that builds on the existing arrangements.

The trial has provided eligible drone operators with more flexible pathways to conduct BVLOS operations across larger areas.

Have your say on future guidance

We expect to open public consultation in November 2026 on draft guidance for broad area BVLOS operations.

The proposed guidance will form Annex B to Advisory Circular (AC) 101-06 and build on the pathways introduced through the trial.

We will seek industry feedback to help ensure the guidance is clear, practical and supports operators applying for broad area BVLOS approvals.

What next

The existing trial arrangements will remain in place until we establish an enduring solution, providing continuity for operators.

We will share more information about the upcoming consultation through the CASA website, Consultation Hub, RPAS News and social media.

In the meantime, operators can continue to access the existing pathways and application information on our broad area BVLOS trial webpage.
