Explaining the rules – Joining the circuit safely

This animation explains how to safely join the circuit at a non-controlled aerodrome by planning ahead, building a clear traffic picture and making predictable decisions.

Joining the circuit safely starts before you reach the aerodrome.

Plan ahead, check the aerodrome information and weather, then listen early to build a clear picture of the traffic. Stay clear of the circuit until you understand what other aircraft are doing and know how you will join safely. Make clear radio calls, keep a good lookout and fly a predictable circuit.

If you are unsure or spacing is tight, stay out, hold or overfly at a safe altitude before joining.

Refresh your knowledge before your next flight. Find more information in the pilot safety hub.
