Simplifying health arrangements focuses on:
- enhancing the Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAME) 2 system
- class 4 medical certificates.
Pilots are responsible for the safety of everyone on board and on the ground. The regulations should make sure pilots can easily access the cockpit while staying fit to fly.
Current aviation medical certification standards are being re-evaluated to ensure they appropriately manage risk and align with international best practice.
Faster medical certification: enabling Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs) to identify non-safety-relevant conditions, allowing the Medical Records System (MRS) to auto-issue Class 1 and 3 certificates and reduce delays.
Smarter resource use will free up CASA medical assessors for complex cases while maintaining safety through audit checks and consistent use of clinical decision guides.
Industry has told us that:
- healthy pilots can find it difficult to get medical clearances
- healthy pilots sometimes get caught in complex and cumbersome regulatory processes that offer little safety benefit
- current operational limitations do not meet general aviation expectations and restrict holders from being able to access additional privileges for example: formation flying and aerobatics.
