Use of NVG in helicopter operations - Trial of Night Vision Goggles

Trial of Night Vision Goggles

CAO 82.0 Amendment Order (No. 1) 2007, and
Instrument CASA 30/07 (Direction — use of night vision devices prohibited in private operations)

On 15 February 2007, Civil Aviation Order 82.0 Amendment Order (No. 1) 2007 was made to amend section 82.0 of the Civil Aviation Orders. CAO 82.0 is titled "Air Operators’ Certificates — applications for certificates and general requirements".

The Amendment Order inserts a new subsection 3D into CAO 82.0 titled "Condition for use of NVD by an AOC holder". This provides that each AOC is subject to the condition that the certificate holder may only use a night vision device as the primary means of terrain avoidance for safe air navigation by means of visual surface reference external to an aircraft in accordance with a CASA approval.

The Amendment Order operates in tandem with direction CASA 30/07 titled "Direction — use of night vision devices prohibited in private operations". This direction to private operators under regulation 209 of CAR 1988 prohibits the use of night vision devices in private operations as the primary means of terrain avoidance.
