Project OS 06/01 - Flight check of aerodrome lighting
New rulechange project has been registered.
CASR 139.200 (1) requires an approved pilot to conduct a flight check of a new aerodrome lighting system. At present, such approvals are based on an ad-hoc/as-required system which relies on processes from the past (the pre-CASA era):
- there are no published procedures or standards for the approval of approved check pilots;
- some pilots who carry out these checks only hold a PPL (which may not be considered appropriate and is under review);
- operators who conduct these flight checks do not hold an AOC which caters for this type of flight/operation (which may not be considered appropriate and is under review); and
- the checking of aerodrome lighting is an ongoing process which, for safety reasons, must be continued.
As an interim measure, this project sets out to develop a process by which flight check pilots can continue to be approved. The intention then is to develop a preferred method of approval of an approved flight check pilot under CASR 139.200 (1)(a) and develop/publish the associated procedures. This may not necessarily lead to a legislative amendment and may only lead to changes in documented procedures and advisory/guidance material.
