Kirstie grew up in an aviation family and began learning to fly at 16 years of age. On leaving school she completed a degree in Criminology and worked for the Queensland Government. After a number or years, she recognised that her passion remained in aviation and joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as an Air Traffic Controller.
Kirstie has held multiple Air Traffic Control and training endorsements in approach, tower and supervisory roles at various locations across Australia. She qualified as an Air Traffic Control Instructor developing and delivering training at the RAAF School of Air Traffic Control East Sale. During her tenure in Defence, she undertook roles such as Aviation Safety Facilitator, Aviation Safety Officer, at numerous Army and RAAF flying bases. In 2013 she deployed as the Air Operations Officer in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan where she was responsible for the safety, planning and management of all flights associated with the mission.
