IREX Sample Examination Questions
The sample questions have been taken from the CASA question database for IREX. These sample questions may or may not appear in your exam. However, the ones displayed here typify questions in an actual CASA exam.
Each question is preceded by a set of six figure numbers, eg 900081 - ignore this as it is for CASA internal use. The next set of numbers indicates the syllabus reference for which that question is testing, eg 2.17 . The syllabus item 2.17, as indicated in Civil Aviation Order (CAO) 40.2.1, Appendix III tells us that the question is testing ‘Fix position, given instrument indications utilising a DME and either NDB or VOR’.
Sample questions were valid at the time of posting on the CASA web page, though some, especially those which requires referencing to a particular ERC, TAC or DAP chart, could have been rendered out of date by now due to regular amendments of air publications. Thus, for example, an identifier for an air route, a route reporting point or a named procedure in a sample question may not exist anymore. However, the question style and format continue to be useful in typifying CASA exam questions in the IREX.
Questions in the IREX are always based on air publications which are current at the time of the sitting.

Preparation of examination papers requires extensive lead time, and therefore it is not possible to take into account information from unscheduled documents, such as NOTAM. However, if a candidate feels that a question has been affected by NOTAM this should be noted in the comment sheet supplied.
The AIP SUP is an integral component of the AIP complete and is issued in accordance with a published schedule. Therefore it may be examined.

The pass percentage for the written IREX shall be 'not less than 70%' of the total possible marks. However, a candidate with less than 100% achievement will be required to present the KDR to the Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) or/and Approved Testing Officer (ATO) before undertaking the flight test. The CFI or/and ATO will orally test the candidate on the areas listed in the KDR to their complete satisfaction, before permitting the candidate to proceed to the flight test. The ATO has the prerogative to re-test the candidate even if the CFI has completed the oral quiz on the KDR items satisfactorily.
