Case study: Electronic flight bags provide pilot choice
CASA has listened to industry and established standards for the support of IT tablet devices as electronic flight bags in cockpits.
The associated legislation and supporting advisory material were finalised and released to industry in December 2012.
An electronic flight bag is an electronic storage and display system for items such as maps and charts and replaces traditional paper documents.
CASA consulted extensively with industry in the development of the relevant Civil Aviation Orders and the supporting Civil Aviation Advisory Publication, and ensured that the information is in line with ICAO standards and recommended practices.
The changes affect only Air Operator's Certificate holders.
All air operators who wish to use an electronic flight bag in place of traditional maps and charts must provide detailed information in their operations manual on how they will establish and administer this support infrastructure.
Extensive information briefings were conducted for CASA staff both before and after the release of the legislation.
