Closure notes

Final CAAP 33-1(1) Aircraft Manual Welding - Approvals and Qualifications was published on 20 July 2011.

Issue

CAAP 33-1(0) is applicable to holders of CAR 33D aircraft welding authorities, applicants for issue or renewal of CAR 33D authorities and AMOs engaged in aircraft maintenance that includes welded repairs to aircraft or aeronautical products.

The CAAP incorporates the CASA syllabus publication "Aircraft Welding Examinations" which is mentioned in CAR 29A (1) and sets out the standards required to be met by applicants for issue or renewal of CAR 33D welding authorities.

The proposed project will address the following matters:

  1. A number of typographic errors are contained in the CAAP which affect the readability of the document but do not materially affect its intent or interpretation.
  2. The syllabus publication erroneously includes testing standards for qualifying of braze welders under the requirements for qualifying of fusion welders. The processes are invalid for the purpose.
  3. The CAAP lists equivalent qualifications which are recognised by CASA. The list is out of currency, citing standards that no longer exist and excluding current international standards.

Project Objective

The proposed amendments are intended to:

  1. Correct typographical errors
  2. Rectify the section dealing with braze welding to cite appropriate technical standards.
  3. Delete references to redundant standards and incorporate contemporary standards.
  4. Align Australian requirements of those of the major foreign Authorities (FAA and EASA)
  5. Align the CAAP with the supporting material (AMC/GM/AC) for Parts 42 and 145.
