Project CS 12/16 - Revision to AC 21-36(0) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Equipment: Airworthiness

Information in AC 21-36 needs updating against FAA AC 20-138B which includes new information on Airborne Supplemental Navigation Sensors for GNSS equipment utilising Aircraft Based Augmentation Systems.

The original reference source for AC 21-36 was originally FAA AC 20-138A. The FAA have since released AC 20-138B which details three (3) different minimum performance standards changes effecting amendments to TSOs referenced in the AC.

AC 21-36(0) does not currently include sufficient requirements for new technologies as contained in the FAA AC 20-138B. Deficiencies in the existing AC 21-36 do not include Aircraft Based Augmentation Systems (ABAS) requirements which does not address TSO-C196 for ABAS.

Consequences of not updating AC 21-36 will limit future growth of GNSS technologies in Australia.

Project objective

  • Revising AC 21-36 to include new information from FAA AC 20-138B - ABAS technologies under TSO-C196.
  • Inclusion of diagrams to clarify points raised in AC 21-36
  • Redevelopment of some of the existing illustrations for readability ease
