DAME newsletter - April 2018
Date of publication:
9 May 2018
From Principal Medical Officer, Michael Drane
May promises to be an exciting month, as three of our CASA doctors will be attending the AsMA conference in Dallas, Texas. Dr Seah will be presenting on behalf of the PMO on the regulatory aspects of mental health. Dr Sharma will be presenting on moving away from the 1 per cent rule.
Many of you have completed the DAME Assessor training online at Aviation Worx. Please note that once you have provided the completed delegation form and insurance document to AvMed your access to the medical records system (MRS) will be updated to allow you the option to assess and issue a Class 2 medical certificate.
This authorisation is provided under CASA delegation CASA 26/18. Please make sure you read all the conditions and understand your obligations in relation to exercising this delegation (it is important to note that although you will be a delegate of CASA, you are not indemnified by us and retain responsibility for your own insurance arrangements).
Please allow up to three business days for your request to become a DAME assessor to be processed. You will not have DAME assessor privileges until this is finalised. We will send you an email with confirmation once you have access. To avoid disappointment please do not book in any examinations until we have sent you your confirmation.
Thank you to everyone who has already undertaken the DAME training required to assess and issue class 2 medical certificates so far. If you haven't yet completed the training I'd encourage you to do so. And if you have any feedback on the training, please do let us know. We're also keen to know if there's anything we can do to make the new process for issuing class 2 medical certificates easier for you and applicants, so please do get in touch if you have any suggestions.
Document tree in MRS
If you are uploading a report to an applicant's file, please do not select 'correspondence' or 'email correspondence' as the file name. If these are selected, you may be unable to view the report in the document tree. If the report is a specialist report, for example, please use this naming convention.
Files that are 'name correspondence' or 'email correspondence' can only be viewed by AvMed staff. Generally, these files do not contain items of medical significance.
Incorrect birthdates in MRS
If you come across any incorrect birthdates in MRS, please be aware that this is because our main database (EAP) is based on a European time zone. As a result, birthdates may appear out by one day. If this is the case, please be reassured that the birthdate is correct on our system. If the birthdate is out by more than one day, please let us know and we will have the error rectified.
Calculation of CRI
If no blood results have been entered into MRS, then no new CRI will be calculated. If you see that the CRI is over, please be aware that this is the score that was calculated at the previous age required examination. Unless bloods have been entered and the CRI is calculating at 15 or above, do not refer for a Stress ECG.
CASA after-hours safety line
If you are having issues with an examination or are unable to gain access to MRS please do not call our after-hours safety line. The CASA employees answering that line will not be able to assist you with your enquiry. The after-hours safety line is purely for reporting safety related issues that cannot wait until the following day such as unsafe operations, low flying aircraft, or unsafe behaviour.

The AvMed line is available from 08:30-17:00 AEST, every business day.
