DAME newsletter - March 2020

From Simon May, Principal Medical Officer

COVID-19

Over the past few weeks, we’ve announced a range of exemptions to help the Australian aviation industry during the changing and unprecedented environment that has resulted from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

One of these exemptions concerns aviation medicals. The exemption means that all Class 1, 2, and 3 medical certificate holders whose current certificate expires either on or after 1 March 2020 can continue to fly for six months beyond the certificates’ current expiry date.

A number of other countries have put in place similar measures.

For those who might need to operate internationally over this period, we will provide an extension to a medical certificate in line with the exemption (as a physical medical certificate may be required for international operations).

Information about all of the exemptions and relief measures we’re putting in place to support industry are available on our COVID-19 advice for industry page LINK.

These measures are just one way we are supporting the aviation industry through this challenging period.

We’re also taking this opportunity to develop new guidance material and improvements to regulations to make them simpler and easier to understand. This will put us in a good position to be able to respond quickly when industry can commence flying again.
