Six hundred drones are set to illuminate the night sky during Vivid Sydney 2022 following the approval of detailed safety checks by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Taking place at Sydney Harbour and delivered by Paramount+ and SKYMAGIC, the display will showcase the streaming service’s most iconic stars and scenes for audiences of all ages to enjoy.

CASA Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Inspector, Mark Lewis, said public safety is imperative when assessing drone light display applications of this size.

“Vivid Sydney is a huge event that attracts thousands of people each night. Safety is our top priority and rigorous checks make sure the display complies with our safety regulations,” Mr Lewis said.

There are several safety measures that take place prior to any drone light display including an opportunity for our inspectors to attend a rehearsal of the display.

“Attending the rehearsal is an opportunity to assess the operator’s ability to conduct the display under simulated circumstances. We work with the operator to make sure the drones don’t fly into each other, stay in formation throughout the display and land safety back on the ground,” he said.

For those who are unable to make it to Vivid Sydney, the drone light display will be available to watch via live stream across Paramount+ and Vivid Sydney social platforms.
