Our role and obligation
In addition to our primary function to conduct the safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia and the operation of Australian aircraft overseas, we are also required to provide comprehensive safety education and training programs, cooperate with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and administer certain features of Part IVA of the Civil Aviation (Carriers' Liability) Act 1959.
Our training programs
Our staff development (training) programs consist of a combination of non-accredited training courses designed specifically for Aviation Safety Regulators (Inspectors), administrative and specialist support staff. We provide professional development programs aimed at all our staff members, and select nationally recognised training courses that lead to the attainment of VET qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
We provide initial, on-the-job, and re-currency training programs for our staff to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their job roles and that their technical knowledge is maintained.

We recognise that further study, relevant to a person’s position and career progression, is an important aspect for growth and development. Our Studies Assistance Program offers employees a range of support services including financial assistance and a range of paid or unpaid leave options for study and exam completion.
