At the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), we’re committed to the attraction, recruitment and retention of Indigenous Australians.
With seven state and three regional offices, we offer a number of exciting and unique opportunities for Indigenous Australians in both operational and support roles.
Who we are
We look after the safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia and Australian aircraft overseas. We also have a range of other safety-related functions including:
- Providing safety education and training programs.
- Providing aviation safety advice to encourage the aviation industry to maintain high safety standards.
- Raising awareness about the importance of aviation safety and compliance with civil aviation legislation.
- Consultation and communication with industry and the community about aviation safety issues.
Your career development

The following initiatives and support are available to our Indigenous staff:
- An Indigenous inclusion network which provides an opportunity to discuss issues and plan future goals to support and promote Indigenous employment.
- A reconciliation action plan as part of the government-wide agenda of 'Closing the Gap' which aims to achieve equality and reduce indigenous disadvantage by creating respectful and supportive relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.
- A workplace diversity program that recognises our staff is one of our greatest strengths. One of our key objectives is to increase Indigenous representation, creating an environment of mutual respect and inclusion and enabling a more representative workforce of the Australian community.
- Access to specific training program for those staff members participating in the Indigenous Australian Government Development Programme (IAGDP).
We are committed to improving outcomes for Indigenous Australians through these initiatives that aim to build mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous staff and create a culture of respect, inclusion and support.
Our involvement in the IAGDP program offers an exciting work environment for Indigenous Australians who are starting out on their career paths, or those embarking on a new career.
Participants will receive a nationally recognised qualification when they successfully complete the program.
We acknowledge Indigenous Australians as the traditional owners of this land and recognise the importance of learning about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

I came to work for CASA through the Federal Government’s IAGDP programme, which allocates its students to Government agencies Australia-wide. To me, CASA was the most interesting, offering flexible working arrangements and opportunities to grow and develop aviation knowledge and skills.
I was born and grew up in Cairns (Northern Queensland) where I went to school, university and onto an apprenticeship in Butchery. Now at CASA, my role as administration support is to participate in a range of activities. Working in this environment has provided me with a strong understanding of aviation regulatory requirements, which in other roles I may not have had the opportunity.
While there have been many challenges to the role such as learning new software, CASA staff are always willing to help. Travel to the CASA Canberra Office for training has provided opportunities to meet other like-minded people and personal development is highly encouraged. I have since pursued additional study to complete a Diploma in Project Management and Diploma in Government.
As an Indigenous person I enjoy coming to work to perform duties without the threat of bullying or harassment. Workplace diversity is evident at CASA and with flexible work arrangements provided I enjoy time with my family and the ability to become more involved in the local community.
