Tyabb airshow safety checks

Comprehensive safety requirements and checks are being put in place for this weekend's Tyabb air show on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The ‘Tyabb on show' organisers have been working closely with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to make the day-long air show a safe success.

CASA is reviewing all the plans for the display flying on Sunday 19 February at the Mornington Peninsula Airport, as well as checking the qualifications of all pilots taking part.

Flying displays will be carried out in an envelope of airspace that is safely separated from the crowds of onlookers and nearby residential areas.

When aircraft are below 1500ft they must not fly over people watching the event or any built up areas.

Pilots will receive special briefings on what actions to take if their aircraft encounters any difficulties during display flying.   They will take their aircraft away from onlookers and residential areas in this situation.

While aircraft will not fly over residential areas while undertaking display flying, they may need to over-fly these areas while positioning, approaching or departing the Mornington Peninsula airport.

CASA spokesman Peter Gibson says several safety inspectors will be present during the day's flying events.

“CASA flying operations inspectors will observe the display flying and all other activities to make sure everything runs smoothly,” Mr Gibson says.

“CASA has been working very closely with the Peninsula Aero Club for many weeks on the approvals for this air show and everything is being done to make it a safe success.   This is the normal process CASA follows for all air shows.”

“People watching the event should be aware that at times it may appear as if aircraft taking part in display flying are right above them.   In fact, this will not be the case – all flying displays will be held a safe distance from people and properties.”

‘Tyabb on show' is a charity fund-raising event which is expected to attract more than 10,000 people to watch aerobatic and formation flying, flights by ex-military warbirds and a race between a V8 supercar and a high performance aircraft.   Full details on the airshow are at:   www.pac.asn.au
