Functions
Legal Services provides assistance and support to the Director and staff in relation to all legal issues affecting and involving the operation of CASA.
Legal Services is responsible for conducting or managing CASA’s involvement in AAT appeals, Federal Court proceedings, coronial inquiries and other legal proceedings as well as CASA’s obligations under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts.
Legal Services also provides legal advice on all aspects of CASA’s regulatory, administrative and corporate functions, and assists staff in the preparation of regulatory and other documents. It also drafts civil aviation orders and other legislative and legal instruments to ensure that they comply with legislative requirements and are valid, effective and legally enforceable (e.g. by ensuring compliance with the Legislative Instruments Act 2003).
Legal Services is also responsible for overseeing CASA’s contractual relations (including insurance) and managing CASA’s enforcement strategies and practices.
