Application for Aviation Security Checks

All pilots over 18 years of age wanting to exercise the privileges of their flight crew licence must either have a current aviation security status check or have applied for one.  Also, CASA cannot issue a licence to anyone who does no have a current aviation security status check.  Proof of having an aviation security status check is recording by you having either an ASIC or an AVID. Applications for Aviation Security Checks should be made using either:

  • Form 498 - Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC); or
  • Form 499 - Aviation Identification.

If you don't know whether you need an ASIC or an AVID please see your ASIC questions answered.

If you already hold an ASIC and are applying for an ASIC renewal, follow these instructions to ensure you are applying in the correct manner.

Applications for initial issue CASA ASIC’s must be made through CASA in Canberra.  This includes applicants who have previously held an under 18 ASIC and who are now applying to have a security check conducted on them for the first time.  Remember, you have not had a security check conducted on you if your last ASIC was an under 18 ASIC.

Applications for ASIC renewals where your previous ASIC was not an under 18 ASIC must be made through the CASA ASIC Renewal Team.

All AVID applications must be made through CASA in Canberra. NB. Applicants who are under 18 cannot apply for an AVID.

Comprehensive guidance material has been provided in the ASIC and AVID application forms. Before completing these forms please make sure you have read and understood the guidance material. If you require help you should first consult with the Chief Flying Instructor of your flying school. Alternatively, you can contact CLARC. Details are provided below.

If you are also applying for a flight crew licence such as a SPL, or upgrading from a PPL to a CPL or getting a licence in another category aircraft you will need to submit the appropriate application form for that licence.
(Note this does not include the reprinting of an existing licence or applying for a photographic licence)

How to apply

Download the appropriate application form.

Complete the form and submit it by mail to CASA’s Licensing and Registration Centre (CLARC) in Canberra if an AVID or initial issue ASIC, or to the CASA ASIC Renewal Team if an ASIC renewal.

If you are under 18 you only need an ASIC if you require frequent access to a secure area of a security controlled airport that has regular public transport (RPT) operations. You do not need to complete the criminal records check in Section 2.3; any of the questions listed in Section 7; or the Security-in-Confidence page of the ASIC form.

Information on your form will be used for the aviation security status checks and to assess your eligibility for a flight crew licence.

Regardless of your age you will need to prove your citizenship with your passport, birth certificate, or citizenship certificate. If you are not an Australian citizen you need to present your passport, visa details, and list your arrival details. Please note, if you hold a permanent residency visa you still need to show your citizenship documents and undergo an immigration check. All the requirements for proof of identity are on the application form.

You will have to attach two recent passport-sized photographs to the application form – the specifications are included on the application form and in the guidance material. One of the photographs and the proof of identity documents need to be certified by the same person who certifies the proof of identification documents. The list of acceptable persons is on the CASA website and an abbreviated list is provided in the guidance material.

If you have an adverse security assessment or you are found to be an unlawful non-citizen you may have your ASIC or AVID application refused. You may also be refused the issue of a flight crew licence if you have applied for one. If you already hold a licence your licence may be suspended or cancelled.

Part 8 of the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005 deals with Review of decisions.
