CyberExams and the approved CPLA 150 hour course

Background

Training for the commercial pilot (aeroplanes) licence may be conducted as an approved 150 hour course. The reduction of 50 hours from the 200 hours required for applicants not undertaking an approved course is based on continuity and integration of theory and flying training.

Integrated course

The Day VFR syllabus includes requirements which are intended to ensure a minimum level of integration between flight and ground training was achieved.

The introduction of CyberExams and separate subject examination parts for the commercial pilot licence, allows an opportunity to provide a greater degree of flexibility in this requirement for both students and ground training organisations.

The Day VFR syllabus, Issue 2.2.2 effective 1 April 2002 contains new pre-requisites intended to maintain at least the same level of integration of flight and ground training as was previously achieved.

The CyberExams CPLA examination

With introduction of the CyberExams CPLA examination, each subject in the commercial pilot syllabus will be tested as a discrete subject examination. There will be seven separate subjects making up the complete commercial pilot licence examination.

The appropriate level of integration for an approved 150 hour aeroplane course must now be achieved by candidates meeting the following pre-requisites for the commercial licence examinations. There are two alternatives available to candidates:

1. A pass in a CPLA subject examination may be credited to a pilot undertaking an approved course of training only if the examination has been attempted after accumulating 5 hours Pilot in Command cross country time. Additionally, the BAK examination must be passed before attempting the CPLA written examinations.
2. Alternatively the CPLA examinations may be attempted after the following phases of training have been achieved:

After passing the GFPT

• Aerodynamics
• Human Factors
• AGK (Aircraft, engine & instrument systems)
• Meteorology

After accumulating 5 hours Pilot in Command Cross country time

• Navigation
• Operation, Performance & Flight Planning
• Flight Rules & Air Law

This policy is included in the Day VFR Syllabus.

Responsibility for managing course

Chief Flying Instructors of schools approved to conduct 150 hour CPLA training should ensure that all students comply strictly with the pre-requisites before attempting CPLA examinations. Should a student attempt and pass an examination/s before meeting the pre-requisites, then that pass cannot be credited towards the approved course. The student will have to meet the pre-requisites, apply to CASA (email: clarc@casa.gov.au) to resit the examination, and pass the exam again.
