Exam Availability
ATPL examinations are available at approved ASL examination centres. They comprise standard examinations for ATP(A)L and ATP(H)L as well as overseas conversion examinations. Pilots seeking to convert an overseas air transport pilot licence need to pass the relevant Air Law and IREX exams.
All ATPL(A) and ATPL(H) exams are individual examinations. Candidates may choose to sit any number of papers at any particular sitting and be credited with a pass in each examination separately. When all seven subjects have been passed , a candidate is awarded a pass in the ATPL examination.
All examinations must be passed within a 3-year period, from the date of the first attempt, successful or otherwise, for a candidate to be awarded an ATPL theory pass.
Aeroplanes/Helicopter for Planning and Performance
The flight planning and performance & loading examinations for aeroplanes are based on the B727. The helicopter flight planning and performance & loading examinations are based on the S76.
Candidates are required to bring their own Boeing 727 Performance and Operating Handbook or S76 Performance and Operating Handbook as applicable to their examination. These handbooks will be subject to the same scrutiny as all other documents that are brought into the examination room.
ATPL information books
ATPL exam information published on the CASA website on items such as new exam application procedures, the removal of scheduled sittings, revised exam material required and provided, etc supersedes such information published in the two ATPL Information Books, Version 2.2.
New versions of these Information Books will incorporate all relevant CyberExams information.

Material required/permitted for exams
All CASA flight crew exams require material that may be provided by the supervisor or/and (required to be) supplied by the candidate.
Exam material 'provided' will be the responsibility of the approved supervisor. Material 'required' shall be the responsibility of the candidate.
Practice Exams
A 'Practice Exams' facility is available to enable interested parties to practise navigating through a typical CyberExams screen-based examination.
Candidates are advised to utilise this to familiarise themselves with a typical CyberExams exam.
(The practice examination requires Intenet Explorer 5.5 or later on Windows with full screen (800x600) mode. Use 'F11' to toggle between full screen and normal mode.)
Recognition of Previous Exam Credits
Examination subjects passed in the current 7 part ATPL exam series remain valid provided the 3 year period to gain credits in all subjects has not passed. The remaining subjects must be completed within the 3 year period using the CyberExams system.
Subjects and incomplete passes from previous exam series are not able to be recognised as the syllabus areas covered by the previous subject parts are substantially different from those covered in the current examinations. It is not possible to carry over any credits for less than a complete pass under the current system.
Cost
CASA fee for each ATPL subject exam is $65.
Overseas Conversion Exams
The Air Law exam for conversion of an overseas ATPL is the same as that for the Australian ATPL, and incurs a fee of AUD$65.
The Commercial Air Law exam is a prerequisite to sitting the ATPL Air Law exam. A command multi-engine instrument rating is also required for the issue of an Australian ATP(A)L. More information on overseas conversions.
