Introduction

CASA has ownership of the flight crew exam system, which uses the Internet to conduct exam business. The employment of the Internet supports timely availability of exams, virtually instantaneous turnaround of exam results, and a convenient one-stop shop for the needs of candidates. This has particular importance for Australia due to its geography, demographic spread and long lines of communication.

For simplicity, the CASA flight crew exam system may be considered as two integrated components – Exam Standards and Exam Delivery.

Exam Standards

CASA retains direct control of Exam Standards which include standards development and setting, the promulgation of syllabi of (aeronautical knowledge) training, development of exam questions, exam setting, exam assessment, and recording of results.

For more information on flight crew examination policies, rules, procedures, technical details and exam types, exam candidates and aeronautical knowledge instructors should proceed to CyberExams.

Exam Delivery

Exam Delivery comprises the tasks of processing exam applications including the collection of fees, arranging exam sessions at agreed dates and times, organising and administering exam venues and procedures, presenting the required exams for the candidates, supervising the conduct of exams, and issuing (and re-issuing) result advice which includes a knowledge deficiency report (KDR).

The CASA component of exam delivery is designed as a convenient one-stop shop for exam candidates.

CASA has assigned the component of exam delivery to approved sectors of the Australian aviation industry. Candidates should contact approved industry delivery providers directly on exam delivery issues, and not CASA.

PPL-type Exams. The PPL exams are available at approximately 300 approved flying training schools throughout Australia, where the CFIs are the supervisors.

Professional Exams. CASA has delegated an independent company, Assessment Services Proprietary Limited (ASL) to supervise the professional (and PPL) exams in a number of cities and towns throughout Australia. Professional exams are those for the CPL, ATPL, Flight Engineer licence and various ratings.

More on bookings for professional exams may be found at the ASL website.

Syllabi of Aeronautical Knowledge Training

The syllabi of aeronautical knowledge training, which guide flight crew candidates seeking the respective licence or rating in their studies and govern the scope and depth of the flight crew exams, are available on the CASA website.

Students and instructors should be aware of the scope and depth of the syllabus of aeronautical knowledge training. This has particular importance for students as knowledge of this provides them with a good picture of what they are required to study, as well as enables them to assess the bono fides and value-for-money of a commercial course. Students are advised to evaluate courses on the basis that every item in the relevant syllabus will be examined, how the course is written and structured around the syllabus items, what progressive checks or tests during the course are available to ensure the standards on each syllabus item may be achieved, what material will be provided to support study of the syllabus item, and that a reasonable time frame has been allocated for the study of the syllabus items.

For more, see CASA web page for its aeronautical knowledge syllabi.

CASA Exam Supervisors

CASA has identified CFI of approved flying training schools in Australia as persons who may be authorised access to, and entrusted with the security of CyberExams and its exam administration, including the supervision of candidates sitting CASA PPL exams.

For more information on how a CFI may become a CyberExams Supervisor, see CyberExams Supervisors.
