Notice of Proposed Rule Making - NPRM 1001OS
Proposed Amendment to an Airworthiness Directive (AD) Requiring Additional Maintenance to Aircraft Transponder Systems
Objectives
To ensure that transponders fitted to Australian registered aircraft are capable of achieving the performance standards to which they were certified.
Key change proposals
Amend AD/RAD/47 Amdt 1 to include the following tests needed to confirm the correct functioning of the transponder and initiate maintenance action as appropriate:- Using a suitable transponder test set, ensure that:
- the duration of all reply pulses (pulse width) is between 0.35 and 0.55
microseconds; - the rise time of all reply pulses (0.1 of pulse amplitude to 0.9 of pulse amplitude)
is 0.05 to 0.1 microseconds;
- the decay time of all reply pulses (0.9 of pulse amplitude to 0.1 of pulse
amplitude) is 0.05 to 0.20 microseconds; and - the amplitude variation between one reply pulse and any other reply pulse is not
greater than 1 dB.
- the duration of all reply pulses (pulse width) is between 0.35 and 0.55
