CASR Part 90 – Additional airworthiness requirements

Project closure notes

Project closed 13 December 2010

CASR Part 90 and its Manual of Standards (MOS) came into effect 1 December 2010. Both CASR Part 90 and the MOS can be found on the CASR Part 90 page.

Project objective

CASR Part 90 will specify the airworthiness standards, additional to the original type certification requirements, that owners/operators are responsible for ensuring compliance prior to operations.

This new Part will replace the system of general Airworthiness Directives (AD) that retroactively make new airworthiness standards applicable to all existing aircraft. Part 90 is considered to be a more appropriate vehicle than ADs for promulgating retroactive airworthiness standards.

Part 90 will consolidate and retain existing requirements from current General ADs in CAO Part 105 with minimal change.

Who Part 90 affects

  • Aircraft owners;
  • Registered operators.

Key proposals

  • Wording and applicability of the requirements to be compatible with the relevant operational Parts (e.g. Parts 121 and 135);
  • Requirements to be reviewed and redrafted to improve clarity and consistency;
  • Retroactive airworthiness standards for air transport operations to be updated to be more closely align with the US Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Parts 121/135, and JAR 26.
