CASA EX 22/2002
An exemption relating to the maximum take-off weight of single engine aircraft engaged in agricultural operations.

Aircraft engaging in agricultural and fire-bombing operations typically take-off at weights greater than the maximum take-off weight appropriate for normal operations. This is permitted in most countries because these aeroplanes are equipped with jettison systems to allow the pilot to dump the load in an emergency.

The legal situation in Australia regarding take-off at weights greater than the normal category maximum take-off weight has long been uncertain. The situation has now been clarified. The Director of CASA has issued two instruments of exemption applicable to single-engine aeroplanes with certificates of airworthiness in the agricultural and restricted categories. These instruments clarify the fact that each aeroplane to which the exemptions apply may take off at weights greater than the maximum take-off weight shown in the aeroplane flight manual.
