Further talks on class 'G' airspace

The Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, announced tonight that high level talks would be held on Monday 2 November to discuss specific issues in relation to changes which have been introduced to airspace between Canberra and Ballina in northern New South Wales.

He said the issues, relating to a small number of aerodromes, were identified at a meeting in Canberra today involving the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation, Airservices Australia, airline operators and the Australian Defence Force.

Mr Toller said the response to the changes in the Class G demonstration airspace was that the concept was sound but that some of the associated procedures needed to be reviewed or improved.

He said the changes offered significant safety benefits by using radar services not previously utilised.

He regretted that Qantas had decided to cancel some services but the significant benefit to safety resulting from the use of radar dictated that the best course was to continue with the trial.
