CASA Media Release - 30 November 1999
New radio service at Ayers Rock Airport

Ayers Rock Airport is to take a lead in Australian aviation with the introduction of a new radio communication service for pilots.

The new service will provide commercial and private pilots with up-to-date information on air traffic movements during Ayers Rock Airport's busiest periods.

Pilots will be given detailed information on aircraft approaching to land, preparing to take-off and flying in the circuit. They will also be provided with accurate weather information.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has given the go-ahead for the introduction of the permanent air-ground radio service following the completion of a trial last month.

A CASA report on the 42 day trial found the air-ground radio service was supported by a large majority of pilots who believed it improved safety.

The report, released last Wednesday, recommended a permanent air-ground radio service be introduced covering the Airport's busy hours of 10am to 3pm.

Ayers Rock Airport management has acted quickly to take up the recommendation, with the service due to begin operating from Wednesday 1 December 1999.

Ayers Rock Airport Manager, Robert Wilson, says the new service is an important improvement for both pilots and air travellers.

"The air-ground radio service makes the job of pilots using Ayers Rock Airport that much easier," Mr Wilson says.

"They will be given timely information on other aircraft on the ground and in the air so they can maintain safe separation. That means air travellers can have a very high level of confidence in the continuing safety of Ayers Rock Airport."

CASA's Assistant Director Aviation Safety Standards, Richard Yates, says Ayers Rock Airport must be congratulated for pioneering the establishment of an air-ground radio service.

"Qantas and Ansett have also played a vital role in funding the trial and supporting the permanent service," Mr Yates says.

"CASA is pleased to have played its role through the regulatory process."
